Mel Gibson Just Confirmed 'Lethal Weapon 5' Is Happening After 22 Years

It looks like Riggs and Murtaugh will be back after all.

Mel Gibson is truly a Hollywood icon, there's no doubt about that. Once again, he is back to remind us that Lethal Weapon 5 is happening. According to a report by We Got This Covered, the fifth installment of the franchise has been a subject of discussion for quite a while now. Back in 2017, a report surfaced that original director Richard Donner was working with Gibson and co-star Danny Glover on the project.

In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Gibson provided a much-needed update, saying, "Yeah! No, absolutely. And the man who was behind all that, the man who brought it to the screen and gave it its, the goodies, is working on it right now: Richard Donner. He's a legend." Looks like there is still a chance we could get a Lethal Weapon 5 and director Richard Donner is trying to make it happen.

Fans were pretty happy with the news and shared their excitement on Twitter. One person wrote, "Mel is a legend. I can't believe they gonna make lethal weapon 5 .I'm over the moon right now!" A second one added, "Glad to see Mel fully make his way back after being the first cancel culture casualty years ago.....guy is an absolute legend."  A third one quipped, "THANK GOD",- ABOUT TIME THEY MADE A 'LETHAL WEAPON 5, DONNER IS 'PHENOMENONIAL',- A MODERN DAY, 'DRAMA' TYPE ๐ŸŽ… SANTA!!!"

Back in 2019, producer Dan Lin also weighed in and provided some inputs. He said, "Weโ€™re trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie. And Dick Donnerโ€™s coming back. The original cast is coming back. And itโ€™s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so itโ€™s about the script.โ€ With all the affirmations floating around, one can be hopeful that we will get to see yet another Lethal Weapon movie. The sequel is expected to bring back Gibson and Glover as mismatched cops Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh and it is almost sure that the movie will include a scene where both of them will say the iconic line, "I am too old for this shit."

The official synopsis of Lethal Weapon reads, "Following the death of his wife, Los Angeles police detective Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) becomes reckless and suicidal. When he is reassigned and partnered with Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), Riggs immediately clashes with the older officer. Together they uncover a massive drug-trafficking ring. As they encounter increasingly dangerous situations, Riggs and Murtaugh begin to form a bond. Riggs' volatile behavior might just help them apprehend the criminals -- if it doesn't kill them both first."

Lethal Weapon 4 released in 1998 and was loved by fans and critics alike. A spin-off TV series also aired on Fox in the US for three seasons, where the roles of Gibson and Glover were played by Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans. The show was ultimately canceled when Seann William Scott replaced Crawford and the actor had a highly publicised fallout with co-stars and the Lethal Weapon creative team.
