'Hocus Pocus 2' Is Officially Happening And Adam Shankman Is Directing The Sequel

Adam Shankman had previously directed many other hit films like Hairspray, A Walk to Remember, The Wedding Planner and Rock of Ages.

Hocus Pocus 2 is happening after nearly 27 years and it has officially signed on a director, reported Variety. Adam Shankman will be directing the sequel that will exclusively feature on Disney+. Previously, Shankman had directed various other hit movies such as  2007 musical Hairspray, Rock of Ages, A Walk to Remember, to name a few.

Shankman took to Instagram to share the news. He uploaded a picture of the script and captioned the picture, writing, "Yep….Thanks with all of my heart dear @disney Looks like Il be working on a looooooottttt of magic for awhile… I feel incredibly honored and humbled to be guiding forward these two Disney crown jewel legacies. My only hope is to honor those who came before me and build something new and exciting, as I desperately try to not let down the fans and enchant the new initiates! Fingers crossed! Xo.”

The director is currently working with Disney+ for the pre-production of Enchanted sequel that is titled Disenchanted. It is not yet known which movie he will start working from now on. His most recent movie was last year’s What Men Want. The sequel Hocus Pocus movie is a follow-up of the 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, who portrayed the character of three witches. These three witches have finally been resurrected and now they are trying to be immortal by feeding on the souls of children in Salem.

The official synopsis of the 1993 movie reads, "After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches' book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal."

The movie, upon its release, was not a very major box office hit as it earned only $39 million worldwide on a $28 million budget. But over the years, the movie has gained a cult following, and it spikes up even more during October every year. The movie also featured Midler’s memorable musical number “I Put a Spell On You.” Going by Shankman's choreographic background, we might just get another musical number in the sequel.

The sequel to Hocus Pocus was announced in October 2019 and it is not known yet if anyone from the original cast will make a return for the sequel. Midler had previously expressed interest in returning to her role as Winifred Sanderson. During a Reddit AMA session, the singer-actress asked fans to “inundate the Disney company.” As reported by PEOPLE, Milder said, "I have canvassed the girls and they are willing to do it, but we have no say in it. So if you want a Hocus Pocus 2, ask the Walt Disney company.” Back in 2016, Parker also expressed excitement at the idea of portraying the role of the Salem witch once again.

She said, "I would love that. I think we’ve all been fairly vocal about being very keen but that hasn’t created any ground swell of movement.”
