Fans were in for a treat when the first footage of the movie was shown at the CinemaCon, showing the first look at the Disney's latest live-action movie.
Disney has been giving us a lot of live-action movies in the recent past, be it Tim Burton’s $1 billion-plus-grosser Alice in Wonderland or Cinderella ($543m), The Jungle Book ($966m), even Emma Watson-led Beauty and the Beast ($1.26b). Maleficent was also one of them. But it was this movie that is often said to have started this flurry of Disney live-action adaptions, reports Comicbook.
Released in 2014, the Angelina Jolie starrer was the talk of the town when it reached cinema halls. And as most fans would know, the sequel of the highly-anticipated movie titled "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" is on its way.
And what's even better is that the movie was pushed six months ahead of its release date to October 18 this year. Wait, that's not all. Fans were in for a treat when the first footage of the movie was shown at the CinemaCon, showing the first look at the upcoming Disney movie.
Although the footage won't make it online anytime soon, however, Comicbook described it as a behind-the-scenes featurette that recaps the classic Sleeping Beauty story. It later takes us to the real question and what the sequel is all about; Is Maleficent good enough to be an adoptive mother to Aurora?
The footage also features Prince Phillip who invited both the women to the castle as they meet Queen Ingrid, played by none other than Michelle Pfeiffer. A marriage proposal between Aurora and Phillip takes place and that's when the drama begins!
Maleficent and Aurora love each other, but they can't decide whether this proposal is a good thing. A shot also shows how Maleficent gets furious when she finds out about the marriage. Although Queen Ingrid says that marriage is a beautiful thing but she has definitely got something else up her sleeves.
There is another footage that shows a dark forest where Aurora is struggling to be a “cookie cutter royal,” and Ingrid tries to be a mother to Aurora, which really makes Maleficent furious.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, the sequel to Maleficent, brings back Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning while new cast members include Michelle Pfieffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein and Robert Lindsay.
There are a few names who were seen in the first film: Sam Riley as Diaval; Imelda Staunton as the pixie Knotgrass; Juno Temple as the pixie Thistlewit; and Lesley Manville as the pixie Flittle.
Jolie explained the central question of Maleficent sequel. "In the film, we pose the question: is Maleficent good enough to be Aurora's mother?"
While Fanning spoke about the divide between Maleficent and Aurora. She said, "Aurora and Maleficent love each other so much. But there is a divide between them. Maleficent is still a little wary of the humans, and Aurora is dealing with the burden of coming into this new life to be this cookie-cutter royal, which is not what Aurora is."
The film is directed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales filmmaker Joachim Ronning. He will be replacing Robert Stromberg, who directed the first movie. The film wrapped production last August.
The first film raked in a total of $241 million at the domestic box office, taking its total worldwide collection $758 million. The Mistress Of Evil will be the fourth live-action adaptation on Disney's releases this year. The other three movies are Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King.
Meanwhile, the ongoing divorce battle between Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt may soon be coming to an end. According to EOnline, "Brad is hoping the worst is behind them and that they can move on from the fighting and painful past. He knows in the long run, the kids are best with both their mom and dad in the picture," the source told EOnline. "He can now move forward and try to be a stable and constant positive influence in their lives."
Well, now that Maleficent 2 is on its way to the cinema halls soon, we can't wait to see what's in store for us!
