Since the reboot series is arriving this October, we can't wait to catch up the nerds of the Midnight Society and listen to what horror stories they have in store for us!
If you are an 80s or a 90s kid, you would know how big "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" was on Nickelodeon when it premiered. The show was a massive hit among critics and fans alike, who loved the horror anthology series. And in a recent update, the show might get a reboot as a feature film, however, a miniseries return on the small screen is imminent, reports Comicbook.
"The beloved anthology series will return this October as a brand-new miniseries and follow new members of the Midnight Society as they gather around a campfire in the woods to share scary stories," the cable network announced, as reported by Comicbook.
"The miniseries will coincide with the upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? theatrical movie from Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players’, and Nickelodeon Movies, in theaters October 2019."
The original TV series, which debuted in 1990, was all about teenagers trying to scare each other, sitting around a campfire in the woods! Calling themselves as the Midnight Society, the show gave young Nickelodeon viewers with creepy stories, yet with tamer subject matter.
Although some of the stories were hilarious, but most of the time, it got a bit too scary, especially considering the fact that it is a kids' show!
And now with the confirmation of a reboot with a miniseries, the popular channel is trying to bring back the horror of the 90s to a younger audience and revive the popular series. The "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" series is written by Gary Dauberman and BenDavid Grabinski.
“That show is so important to me. I didn’t want to age it down too much because for it’s time, it had some really disturbing episodes and some really dark episodes. Not every story the Midnight Society told ended with happily ever after or a person learning their lesson and it will never happen again," Dauberman previously told SlashFilm.
"I really embraced that side of things and I think it’s been a long time. I think fear is healthy for kids. I don’t think we have to always sand down the edges of things and that’s something I really wanted to do with Are You Afraid of the Dark? I think it is scary and I think kids will be scared watching it at times, and also they’ll laugh at times. I think it’s got a great message. I think it’s got a great heart to it but it is still scary. I think that’s great. I think it’s going to open it up to a wider audience.”
Ever since the "Are You Afraid Of The Dark?" reboot talks were confirmed, fans have been wondering how the makers are going to give it a new lease of life. Although not much about the reboot has been revealed till now, but we are certain that the Midnight Society will still be a huge part of the much-anticipated mini-series.
The TV series first premiered with the episode "The Tale of the Twisted Claw" as a pilot on Halloween 1990 on YTV and aired until June 11, 2000. Following the success of the show, it also premiered on Nickelodeon's SNICK on August 15, 1992, and aired until April 20, 1996. It became both a critical and commercial success, garnering numerous awards as the show went on.
The show starred Ross Hull, Daniel DeSanto, Raine Pare-Coull, Jodie Resther Jason Alisharan, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Elisha Cuthbert, David Deveau, Rachel Blanchard, Nathaniel Moreau, Kareem Blackwell and Vanessa Lengies among other prominent actors.
And since the reboot is arriving in October, we can't wait to catch up with the nerds of the Midnight Society and listen to what horror stories they have in store for us! Well, one thing is for certain, it is going to be scarier and better because aren't we all afraid of the dark?
