Although the trio has stated their interest before, this is the first concrete update on that front. We are stoked!
This year, we all know Halloween is not going to be the same. After LA imposed a ban on traditional celebrations during Halloween, chances are, most of us will stay at home rather than going out for Trick or Treating. While this makes a lot of people understandably sad, we might have some news to cheer you guys up. It looks like our fan-favorite Halloween witchy classic Hocus Pocus really is getting a sequel with the original trio of witches and we cannot hold our excitement!
According to a report by The DisInsider, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are discussing their return as the Sanderson sisters in a new film. In recent years, the trio has spoken extensively about their interest in the possibility of playing the characters again. This report gives a concrete update that the actors have been approached in some capacity and that's a huge deal for all Hocus Pocus fans out there. The report also stated that the sequel is being developed by Disney+ under the director Alan Shankman.
While the website has noted that they can't confirm "whether or not any of them have signed on as of today; however I had have heard from one source talks have taken place via Zoom." The production of the sequel is expected to begin early next year in Los Angeles and Massachusetts, but the movie does not have a set release date yet. In an interview with Comicbook, Mick Garris, the original writer of Hocus Pocus said, "I’m excited about it, but I really think the main reason the movie worked was the Sanderson Sisters, those actresses in those roles, those performances, that I think is the key to that movie’s long life."
He continued, "It was only modestly successful when it came out, at best. And I think they are the reasons that it’s still around since it came out in 1993. And I would love to see them return in it. I think that’s the plan, but I don’t know. I heard that that is what’s happening, and I believe it’s going to be for Disney+, but I’m not involved in it, which is fine. You don’t always want to revisit all of the touchstones of your past.”
Sarah Jessica Parker, who played the role of Sarah Sanderson in the movie, has also been very vocal about her wish to return to a sequel. In an interview with Quarantined With Bruce, she said, "I think that it is something Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and I are all very hospitable to the idea. I think for a long time, people were talking about it as if people were moving forward with it in a real way but we were unaware of it. But I think now, we've gotten to the point where we’ve agreed publicly to the right people, "yes, that would be a very, very fun idea," so we’ll see what the future holds."
Bette Midler, who played the role of Winifred Sanderson, said, "I mean she's, in the zeitgeist. I have met people -- I've met grownup people, like 40-year-olds, 50-year-olds -- who say, 'Oh I remember that! Hocus Pocus! I was brought up on that.' It's so mortifying 'cause I still look 35." When asked about if she will be signing or not, the actress said, "I can't wait to read the script. We're gonna see what happens."
She continued, "We actually talk about it whenever we see each other. We laugh, we say, 'Oh, wouldn't it be great if?' Because all of us had pretty much the same experience on it." Kathy Najimy, who played the role of Mary Sanderson, said, "I heard about it online at the same time as [everyone else]. But here's the honest answer: Sarah and Bette and I all have a million projects and things that we're into, so I don't know if they're gonna offer us [roles]. I don't know if the worlds are going to collide so that we could all three do it at the same time. But I'm happy that it's happening because the fans are really rabid and they really want it. And if we're not all available to star in it, I think it would be so great to do a cameo. I think that'd be really fun."
