This 'Princess Bride' Themed Pop-Up Bar In Chicago Brings The Iconic Movie To Life

The dreamy pop-up bar pays homage to the iconic characters like Westley, Inigo Montoya, Vizzini and Fezzik.

The Princess Bride is regarded as one of the best romantic comedies of all time, and there is one bar in Chicago that is honoring the movie with a pop-up bar themed on the movie. It is the sixth cocktail bar themed around the movie that opened on February 11. The pop-up bar in Lincoln Square is decked up with shiny tiaras, trailing flowers and vines, and beautiful lights, along with the production stills and life-size cutouts of the main characters, and memorable quotes from the movie. Even though the movie was not a box office success when it first released, but later on, it went on to become a cult classic and was inducted into the National Film Registry for being "culturally significant."

The name of the bar comes from the frequently repeated lines in the movie when Princess Buttercup tells Westley to do something and he always answers with "As you wish". Dave Andrews, a spokesman for the Fifty/50 Restaurant Group, in a conversation with CNN, said, "For us, being fans of this movie, we just wanted to execute it in one of our best spaces we have, make it as fully immersive as possible in the decor and have the drinks to be inventive, playful, fun and match everything."

Some seating areas of the place is decorated in a way to pay homage to the characters like Westley, Inigo Montoya, Vizzini and Fezzik. Andrews added, "Having a fully immersive experience is what makes people happy. Heavy Easter eggs around one-off things from the movie that aren't super mainstream and people are into and are nods to those things make people really happy as well." When you walk inside the bar, the first thing you will be greeted with is a logo featuring Buttercup and Westley holding a cocktail. It is created and designed by Fifty/50 Restaurant Group marketing director and pop-up concept designer Sarah Zelman, who is also a huge fan of the movie.

The further you walk inside, guests will experience a regal walk on the fake grass which is surrounded by large installations on the walls that tells the origin story. Zelman quipped, "If you remember in the movie, the grandpa starts reading the book to his grandson, so the first thing you see are those seven lines of the movie and the first area is kind of alluding to the farm area where there are rolling hills and it's very British countryside. That's where the story kind of starts. That's also where our Princess Buttercup, Westley and Fezzik live. Each of those has their own respective quotes on them."

The bar menu features 'The Kissing Book' and '"Inconceivable' that features 16 other cocktails. The Kissing Book makes up for gin with ginger, cherry, and cranberry tonic, while the Inconceivable mixes Aperol, tequila, green chartreuse, oyster tincture and strawberry-jalapeno cordial, plus a chocolate-covered strawberry. The attention to detail is so brilliant in this bar that even the ice cubes are themed.

Zelman added, "I think that's another thing that makes [the movie] really special -- it's not just one demographic or one ten-year window of people who had this as a big part of their childhood. It's everybody from the time the movie came out until now." Because of the romantic nature of the place, some couples have celebrated their anniversaries and other important moments there. The bar is also kid-friendly and it serves as a quaint place to spend time with your family. Zelman concluded saying, "My favorite thing that I've seen is people coming [in character costumes]. I just feel honored that people are appreciating it this much because I did work really hard on it and I tried to stay true to the movie."
