Christians Are Furious With Avril Lavigne For Her New Song About Devil: 'You Need Jesus'

Avril Lavigne had earlier explained how the song was actually about a real-life toxic relationship she was in while battling Lyme disease.

Avril Lavigne was a true rockstar back in the early 2000s and millennials have all grown up listening to her music. Known for her black eyeliner, ripped clothes and bobby pin ornaments, the “Complicated” singer has now faced flak for her new single.

And the criticism comes from none other than her Christian fans who are extremely upset with the lyrics of her new song titled: I Fell In Love With The Devil. As reported by New York Post.

"I fell in love with the devil. Someone send me an angel," Lavigne sings in her fourth single off her new album that came out last month. "Please save me from this hell...it's killing me," she continues.

And to add to the woes, the "Sk8er Boi" hitmaker even posted an image on her Twitter account in which she can be seen in the woods wearing black and holding a crucifix, taking us back to her emo look. Several fans also noticed the uncanny resemblance to her 2013 goth-themed wedding to ex-husband Chad Kroeger from Nickelback. Her caption reads, “IFellInLoveWithTheDevil” in medieval-style lettering.

And as expected, there was a flurry of tweets targeting the pop singer over her choice of lyrics. A social media user said: "You need Jesus," talking about her first single from the album "Head Above Water," in which she talks about reaching out to God. "God saved you and blessed you with another opportunity to choose. Now you have this crap?"

She continued: "Get your soul right with Jesus. Only one who can save you, yet you hold his cross and blaspheme his name? I pray for your salvation."

Although the majority of the Christian audience was furious with her, many of her hardcore fans were absolutely thrilled to have the goth Avril back. A social media user also lauded her for addressing a difficult subject: “As a Domestic Violence Survivor, I really appreciate this song. It’s good to bring more awareness to this issue. Many people don’t understand how toxic relationships effect the victim. Thank you!”

Despite the severe backlash that Avril had to face following the song, the pop singer had spoken to a German newspaper Aargauer Zeitung earlier, explaining how the song was actually about a real-life toxic relationship she was in while battling Lyme disease.

“It was fierce and I was really scared. I was still weakened and already so vulnerable and fearful and insecure at the time. Then he came. That was what they call a ‘toxic relationship,’ and the only good thing is that it did not take long. I'm out of there fast, literally stormed. And as so often with me, a song evolved from the experience,” she told the outlet in February.

Although many of her fans said that they will be unfollowing her social media account, others expressed love for the new song and her goth look.
