There are so many things about the festive season we love! From family to food to gifts, here are some reasons Christmas is our favorite time of the year.
There are no two ways about it - Christmas is a special time of the year. No matter how you choose to celebrate it, whether with a big ol' tree and eggnog, or a quiet night in with Chinese food and a seasonal special on TV, everyone has their own little traditions. Most of the time, you're surrounded by a whirlwind of family, food, and festivities, something that you look forward to every year. Here are some reasons why we think Christmas is the most magical time of the year.
Festivities are best spent with family - whether it's your extended biological family that drives you nuts (but that one aunt makes amazing cookies, every year), or your chosen family in your city. There's nothing quite like spending Christmas with your loved ones, coming home to bad jokes and family traditions that you grew up with, year after year.
What would Christmas be without food? Just any other nondescript day of the year. It's the one time of the year where everyone goes into a frenzy to make and eat the best food, whether it's that delicious turkey on Christmas day, sandwiches made from Christmas leftovers, bursting with goodness, cookies, cakes, and every kind of dessert possible, it's the best time of the year to throw away your inhibitions and just eat like royalty.
Come on. It might sound shallow, but everyone loves gifts. Even if you don't always get what you want or asked for, there is something joyous and beautiful about a pile of gifts wrapped up nicely under a Christmas tree, and the annual tradition of sitting with family, opening presents, ripping off the wrapping paper gleefully, and watching everyone's reactions as their presents are revealed. And if you get stuck with a dud present, you can always regift them. Nobody has to know.
You won't always have a white Christmas, but the years you do are simply magical. There's nothing quite like waking up to a fresh dusting of snow on the ground, knowing that you can run out to play in the snow (nobody's too old for a snowball fight) and then come right back in for some hot chocolate and holiday cookies.
Come December, the parties begin. Right from the beginning of the month, social calendars fill up with work parties, pot lucks, and friendly gatherings, and you don't even need a specific reason to just hang out during the holiday season. Put on some Christmas music, play a few games, drink mulled wine and celebrate the end of another year. What could possibly be better?
Some might find Christmas shopping cumbersome, but if you plan well in advance and get really organized about it, shopping for gifts can be a hugely rewarding experience. It's a great feeling deciding on a gift for someone and then purchasing it, knowing it will bring someone else joy. And while you're doing that, there's no harm in getting a few treats for yourself too! After all, Christmas only comes once a year, doesn't it?
Christmastime leaves you with enough social events to give you the perfect excuse to dress up in something special almost every day. Whether it's a nice dress for a work party or a bulky patterned sweater for a Christmas lunch at home, the festival season is the one time of the year you can dust off the fancy clothes and shoes you keep stashed away in the closet for a special occasion.
What's Christmas without pulling out the family box of ornaments to adorn your Christmas tree with? Or going for a walk around the neighborhood to look at the decorations in everyone's windows? No matter how minimalist your life is for the rest of the year, Christmas is the time to let loose and cover your house in sparkly lights and tinsel. There's no such thing as too much!
