The studio has got John August on board to pen the script. He is best known for his work in films such as Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
When Grease released in 1978, it had one of the most memorable love affairs of all time. People loved the slicked back hair on John Travolta and he was a rage. Now the studio division Paramount Players is taking fans back to the olden times with a Grease prequel that is on its way.
Titled 'Summer Nights', the movie will take us back to 1959, giving us a glimpse into the pre-Grease storyline. As you may have guessed, the title comes from one of the musical’s foremost earworms, “Summer Nights", reports The Hollywood Reporter.
The studio has got John August on board to pen the script. He is best known for his work in films such as Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. August is most notably known for his collaborations with Tim Burton. And he has two big movies coming up this year.
He will be sharing writing credits on Aladdin, Disney’s live-action remake of its classic animated movie. He has also worked on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which is produced by none other than Guillermo del Toro who is bringing a new lease of life to children’s horror stories.
The 1978 musical film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John was a cultural milestone and a new movie after all these years was always been on the cards. This is considering the fact there have been several remakes based on the movie.
Grease amassed a total of $400 million at the global box office following several remakes and annual sing-along re-releases. For the younger audience, you might recall that Grease starring Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens was also aired on Fox in 2016. It also won five Emmys.
And now 41 years after its release, the 1978 rom-com is getting a reboot and we will finally get to see the love story of John Travolta and Olivia Newton John’s high school characters Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson. However, when a sequel was made in 1982 starring Michelle Pfeiffer, the movie turned out to be a total dud at the box office and was never able to recreate the magic that Grease offered.
Even Olivia and John had turned down the movie as they were seemingly not impressed with the plot. When Olivia was asked about the Grease sequel, she had earlier said: "Not a lot. They did ask us, I think they approached John and I to do it, and then it didn't happen, and I didn't think it was gonna happen, and then they made it with other people," reports DailyMail.
The synopsis of 1978 Grease reads: "Experience the friendships, romances and adventures of a group of high school kids in the 1950s. Welcome to the singing and dancing world of "Grease," the most successful movie musical of all time. A wholesome exchange student (Olivia Newton-John) and a leather-clad Danny (John Travolta) have a summer romance, but will it cross clique lines?"
Meanwhile, John Travolta was recently in the news after his wife Kelly Preston paid tributes to their late son. Just this past weekend, the 56-year-old actress shared an adorable photo of herself with her husband, John Travolta, and their son, Jett on Instagram and it has moved many to tears.
"To my sweet love, Jett... you are in our hearts forever," Kelly wrote with a black-and-white photo of her and John kissing Jett. "I send love to all of the beautiful autistic children and the wonderful people who love them. May we all shine and grant love and respect to children with special needs💕 #autismawareness #autism"
Jett had passed away in 2009 at the age of 16 in an unfortunate incident in the Bahamas. He hit his head on a bathtub while suffering a seizure during a family trip. The teen had autism and had previously suffered from seizures.
