With the fifth installment of Scream officially underway, the nostalgia for the 1996 slasher horror classic is at an all-time high. While most of the diehard Scream fans have watched Ghostface slash his way through Woodsboro too many times to count, there are few facts that might still be unknown for even the most sincere fans. Such as the time Drew Barrymore accidentally called 911 multiple times, according to a post on Reddit.

Yes, you read that right. 911 operators received the call multiple times where they heard someone screaming and hanging up. While they were in the middle of one of the takes, the police rang back in confusion to ask why they kept calling, screaming, and then disconnecting the call. It was then the crew realized that the prop master JP Jones had forgotten to unplug the phone the actress was using. Jones recounted the incident, saying, "Drew starts dialing 911, screaming, hanging up, 911, screaming, hanging up."

He continued, "We’re in the middle of a take, and the phone starts ringing, and we’re like, ‘What’s going on? Why is the phone ringing?’ And it’s the police asking what the hell we’re doing, and why do we keep calling them?” The folks on Reddit found this incident to be quite amusing and left a lot of interesting comments. One person wrote, "Lol what? You’d hope if someone calls the cops screaming they would send someone over there ASAP on top of calling back. As a small kid in Canada I called 911 out of curiosity and hung up a second into the call and they still sent someone over pretty fast."

A second one added, "There's a device you can hook a prop phone to so you can make it ring on cue, usually for live theater because if it's a film you can add the sound effect in post. Why would you shoot a scene with the real phone on location?" A third one quipped, "You'd think this would have been a red flag for police and they'd have traced the call....."

According to another Redditor, Barrymore was originally cast for the role of Sidney Prescott, but she had to drop out of playing the lead role due to other commitments. Instead, she chose to play the role of Casey Becker. Barrymore was a huge star at the time and she featured heavily in the film's advertising campaign, which is why audiences were shocked when her character was killed off so early in the film. It was actually Stephen King who told Craven that his movie would not be successful if he fails to capture the interest of the audience in the first five minutes. Craven knew killing off the person people assumed was a lead would keep the audience guessing. Barrymore said, "In the horror film genre, my biggest pet peeve was that I always knew the main character was going to be slugging through at the end but was going to creak by and make it. I asked if I could be Casey Becker so that we would establish this rule does not apply in this film."
