Apple has acquired exclusive streaming rights to all 96 episodes of the live-action HBO series along with some specials.
Apple is set to acquire all the seasons of the upcoming Fraggle Rock reboot which will debut on Apple TV Plus, reported Vulture. The company has partnered with The Jim Henson Company to reboot the classic series and it is also going to be a part of Apple Originals’ lineup for kids and families. As a part of the agreement, Apple has acquired exclusive streaming rights to all 96 episodes of the live-action HBO series along with some specials. All of it will be available to the subscribers in over 100 countries from May 27.
This is the first time Apple TV will offer some previously produced content as a part of its entertainment lineup, but that does not mean the streaming channel is introducing itself in the library business. According to a source that is familiar with Apple TV's strategy, the company is still not open to using Apple TV+ as a repository for old shows and movies like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime does.
The main reason for not doing so, according to the source is because there simply aren’t enough great titles around to make a library strategy work, especially with big brands like Disney, Warner Bros, and Universal Pictures keeping their best titles confined to their own platforms. Fraggle Rock is an exception for Apple TV because there are old episodes available for streaming, along with the new content which is being made.
The source also mentioned that if Apple TV didn't acquire the library, subscribers who want to watch Fraggle Rock had to go to HBO to watch the old episodes and had to come back to Apple TV+ for the new ones. Now, having both of them on the same platform, Apple can now market itself as the home to all content related to Fraggle rock. The source also mentioned that Henson executives were the first ones to pitch the idea of giving the classic episodes along with the deal of the reboot. The idea didn't appeal to Apple in the beginning but later on, realized that it didn't make sense for the old episodes to air elsewhere if they are doing the reboot.
The new Fraggle Rock series is going to be produced by The Jim Henson Company and the reboot will also reunite the original stars of the show like Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley, and Uncle Travelling Matt. Longtime fans will also be treated with new songs and adventures, but it will contain the same spirit of the original Fraggle Rock. Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford will serve as the executive producers along with Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer. Rita Peruggi will be the producer and the script will be penned by Matt Fusfeld and Alex Cuthbertson.
The original Fraggle Rock ran for almost 100 episodes from 1983-1987 and the success of the series inspired an animated series that ran for one season on NBC. There have also been various talks about a movie adaptation based on the series, but nothing solid has been announced yet.
