Speaking with BBC Radio 2 Jackman said there's been some talks about a sequel, he isn't entirely sure about it, and he wouldn't miss the opportunity to star in it.
Hugh Jackman starrer, The Greatest Showman released in 2017, raked in around $435 million in earnings and became an instant smash hit and one of the biggest movies of that year. Although it took 8 years for Michael Gracey, the film's director to write and make the movie, there was a buzz about work on a sequel to the movie reports ET Canada. BBC Radio 2 in an interview with Jackman asked the actor about a possible sequel to the musical. Although Jackman did not give a straight answer he did mention that The Greatest Showman 2 was possibly in the works. Jackman revealed this when he was speaking about his new film, Missing Link, an animated comedy that also stars Zoe Saldana, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, David Walliams and Timothy Olyphant. Jackman said, "The real answer is 'could be', I'm not sure. I'm being completely honest with you, there is talk of something going around but no one is really sure. I think right now there's more emphasis being put on what will happen with...no one is really sure right now, so that's the honest truth. But I think someone is working on a treatment for something... I know they are, they're working on a treatment for something."
When asked about his role in the sequel, and if he would be glad to be a part of the second movie, Jackman seemingly hinted about the plot although not directly. It may not necessarily revolve around Jackman's character. He said, "I don't know. I would like to be part of it, for sure, and I don't know if it would be centred on my character. The other thing is, it did take eight years to get (the first movie) made and that wasn't all eight years of convincing people. It takes a long time to write stuff."
Earlier The Sun had reported about the second movie being made. Gracey was attending the Brit Awards 2019 in London where Jackman was set to perform numbers from the musical. The Oscar-nominated actor opened the 2019 BRIT Awards with an expansive version of The Greatest Show. Gracey told the paper that the two were "laying the foundations for a follow-up after its (the first film's) global success."
Gracey further said, "When a movie becomes as big a success as this, it’s only natural there is demand for a sequel. So those discussions have started and we are working on one right now." Speaking about the pain and suffering he endured trying to get the movie off the ground Gracey said, "It was hard to get the film produced in the first place. There were huge doubts about it for a very long time and some backers withdrew their money."
The actor has expressed his wish to be a part of the sequel several times before if a second movie was to be made. Now that it has, Jackman must be thrilled and his hoping to get a call. He told BBC Radio 5 Live during an interview at the beginning of this year that he would not miss the opportunity if he is offered a role in the sequel. He said, "If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I'd get the top hat back out."
The Greatest Showman is a fictitious portrayal of real-life personality and popular American figure, PT Barnum. He wore many hats such as that of a showman, politician, and businessman to name a few. The Greatest Showman also achieved a rare feat of being the third highest selling musical of all time. The song This Is Me from the musical, also the official lead single of the movie, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song at the 75th Golden Globe Awards.
It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 90th Oscars and later nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Song Written at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Even though Jackman might star in the sequel of the movie when it is made, it is not sure whether the other cast such as Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, and Keala Settle will return for the second movie. The songwriting duo of Pasek and Paul who wrote the song, This Is Me, may return.
