Joaquin Phoenix Nominated For Best Actor At The Oscars For 'Joker'

Joaquin Phoenix Nominated For Best Actor At The Oscars For 'Joker'

If Phoenix does win this award, this will be his first Oscar, even though he was previously nominated for his role in Gladiator, Walk The Line, and The Master.

The nominations for this year's Academy Award have been announced and Joker is leading the race. Among these 11 nominations, Joaquin Phoenix has now been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker, reported Wall Street Journal. The 45-year-old actor has joined fellow nominees - Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), and Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory). The event is going to take place at the L.A. Dolby Theater on February 9 and we can't any longer.

'Joker' dealt with the origin story of the comic book villain and the movie alone is up for the best picture, best director and best actor for Joaquin Phoenix, plus eight other awards. Along with Joker, other movies that have 10 nominations each are The Irishman, 1917, and Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

Florence Pugh is in the running for the award of best supporting actress for Little Women and it is also her first Oscar nomination. In an interview with BBC, the 24-year-old actor said, "You've got to keep on going and hopefully you'll see something at the end of the tunnel." Before earning the nomination of the best actor at Oscars, Phoenix had already won the best actor award at the Golden Globes and last night, he collected the Critics' Choice Award as well.

After collecting his award last night, Phoenix was heard saying, "Scott Silver and Todd Phillips, you checked us. You took a comic book character and used it to talk about childhood trauma, gun violence, isolation, and mental health, and instead of inciting violence, you invited the audience in to see what it feels like when you're one of the forgotten. I need to thank my mum. Mum, you've always been my greatest inspiration, even when self-pity led me astray. You've never given up on me and I deeply appreciate your support."

If Phoenix does win this award, this will be his first Oscar win, even though previously he was nominated for his performances in Gladiator, Walk The Line, and The Master. The movie is directed by Todd Phillips who has earned his own nomination for the best director and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has also received nominations, while the film is also in the running for Best Picture.

The movie was a massive hit at the box office as it has managed to earn more than $1 billion worldwide. The movie is a dark, standalone look at the origin story of Batman's nemesis, but this movie focuses on the story of a man who has been rejected by society. The official synopsis of the movie reads, "Forever alone in a crowd, failed comedian Arthur Fleck seeks connection as he walks the streets of Gotham City. Arthur wears two masks -- the one he paints for his day job as a clown, and the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel like he's part of the world around him. Isolated, bullied and disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as the Joker."
