There has been speculation that Depp could be a part of the new live-action remake of 'The Addams Family'.
The Tim Burton universe of films has many interesting and intriguing movies. All the way from Pee-wee's Big Adventure, which was his directorial debut to the most recent film, the live-action remake of Dumbo, he has managed to bewitch the audience with his unique gothic style. One face that makes a recurring appearance in many of Burton's movies, other than his ex Helena Bonham Carter, is Johnny Depp. Depp has been in rough waters the past few weeks, following the libel case which was ruled against him. He was removed from the Fantastic Beasts and the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise post the ruling as well.

There have now been reports that Depp is in talks with his long-time friend and creative ally, Burton for a new project. The actor and director have together collaborated on eight films in total. Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman has told We Got It Covered that Depp and Burton are probably partnering up once again for a new project. While Richtman is unsure about what this new venture could be, he said that it could possibly be the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 film Beetlejuice. The never-ending wait for the second installment of the film has been in and out of development all the way from the 1990s.
For years there has been speculation about what the Beetlejuice sequel would entail. All the way back in 2012, MTV reported that while the two were promoting their film Dark Shadows, they joked about working on Beetlejuice 2 together. "You'll be playing Jeffrey Jones," he said to Depp and probably meant he would play the character of Charles Deetz. This would be odd considering that would be playing Winona Ryder's father and the two have a dating history. Even in 2019, there was an update about the film but it was not good news. Burton, when asked about the sequel, said that there might just not be one.

While we may not be seeing Depp in Beetlejuice could it be that he is reaching out to Burton for another project he is currently working on? Deadline reported that Burton is currently working on developing a live-action TV series of The Addams Family. While the series would be perfect for Burton's style, his favorite male lead would also do well in the gothic series. In fact, fans seem to think so too since following the announcement of the live-action series there have been many people campaigning for Depp to play Gomez Addams. They have even gone a step ahead to recommend Bonham Carter to play Morticia Addams. What a perfect Tim Burton product that would be!

Depp and Burton have had a successful run starting with Edward Scissorhands, followed by Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows. Among the murkiness that surrounds Depp currently, it is highly plausible that Burton would make him feel welcome on the big screen again. As Giant Freakin Robot puts it, "It’s difficult to see any other director or studio taking a chance on the actor right now." The actor and director have a relationship that goes way back and it is most likely that if Depp were to return to making movies, it would be through the Burton universe.
