'Mamma Mia 3' Is In The Works, Producer Says: "It's Meant To Be A Trilogy"

Here we go again!

We have amazing news for all Mamma Mia! fans out there as Judy Craymer just told Daily Mail that the movie franchise inspired by and built around the music of ABBA will likely have a third movie. Craymer said that she will start thinking about this project seriously, but also added that the COVID-19 pandemic is pretty distracting. While she has managed to avoid the virus, she is having concentration problems, like most of us during such uncertain times.

She said, "I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog. I think one day there will be another film because there's meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it." She also added that she would want to add the four new songs penned by ABBA's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. The artists wrote these songs for the virtual concert they've planned with fellow ABBA members Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. It is supposed to release in September 2020.

The first and second Mamma Mia! featured a star-studded cast including the likes of Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Amanda Seyfried. Lily James of Downton Abbey fame appeared as the lead in the sequel movie. Craymer, who launched the franchise two decades ago said the production has ‘always been restorative’. The movie opened just 2 weeks after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

She said, "We were there. 9/11 struck while we were still in the rehearsal room, just about to move into the theatre. The actors were on their way to rehearsal when the first plane struck. Phyllida Lloyd went from being a director to a therapist. They realized that to be doing something to help the city was the right thing." A few weeks after this incident, an audience was invited to a final dress rehearsal.

Craymer recalled, "It was a big moment for people. That’s the joy of the theatre, isn’t it? Audiences, a community, everyone feeling an emotion together." Meryl Streep is said to have taken her children to a later performance. While talking about a musical on Mamma Mia! Craymer added, "It’s a thought." But, the producer also understands how fragile the theater industry is right now.

While all sounds good from Craymer's end, Amanda Seyfried is not too hopeful. In an interview with Collider, the actress says, "Well it's a better story because they had something to grow on. The first story had to match the stage show so they were kind of stuck. With the second story, it could have been anything. Having Meryl's [Streep] character die gave us so many good storylines. It was kind of a genius idea because you're like, 'No, we don't want to lose her'.But at the same time, look at what you can do, you can go back."

She continued, "I wish there was a Mamma Mia! 3, but I'll tell you what – I've said it before and I'll say it again and I hope I'm wrong again – I don't think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie. Because we'd have to use 'Super Trooper' again and we'd have to use 'Mamma Mia' again and have to use them in a different way."
