Mattel Is Now Selling David Bowie Barbie Dolls Dressed As Ziggy Stardust

The Barbie is replete with a sparkly bodysuit, platform boots, and painted nails.

The iconic lines of Get ready to take your protein pills and check ignition as we are ready to restore Major Tom's connection to ground control once again from the song "Space Oddity" by eclectic musician and actor David Bowie holds a special place in all of our hearts. It's hard to fathom that the song was released 50-years ago. Bowie was only 22-years-old when he first sang the song. He sadly passed away in 2016.  For the 50th anniversary of "Space Oddity", fans celebrated by purchasing box sets of the single and album, and by even watched Johnny Depp cover the iconic glam rocker.

Similarly, Mattel decided to release a new Barbie-themed after Bowie (or rather Ziggy Stardust) himself in honor of the song's 50th anniversary, The Guardian reported. The company released a special edition of Bowie's famed alter ego character. It was priced at $50 and the collector's item is dressed in a spectacularly detailed fashion. The Barbie is replete with a sparkly bodysuit, platform boots, and painted nails.

"Barbie honors the ultimate pop chameleon, English singer, songwriter, and actor, David Bowie, whose dramatic musical transformations continue to influence and inspire. With a career spanning over five decades, David Bowie was at the vanguard of contemporary culture as a musician, artist, and icon. He was, and remains to be, a unique presence in contemporary culture. Dressed as Bowie’s fantastic sci-fi alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, in the iconic metallic ‘spacesuit,’ this collectible Barbie® doll honors the cultural legacy of the musical genius who redefined rock and roll. Subject to availability. Colors and decorations may vary." the acclaimed brand wrote on their website.

The Ziggy Stardust character was first introduced by Bowie in 1971, two years after the release of "Space Oddity". He also based his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars around it, featuring the classic songs "Five Years", "Starman", and "Suffragette City". Needless to say, the Bowie/Ziggy themed Barbie doll is spectacular and customer reviews have raved about it. I love it! A must for any Barbie collector. I'm a fan of Bowie's and think it is gorgeous! Thank you so much! It will be displayed proudly! one user wrote. Another added: Since I am a big fan this doll is already proudly displaying on my room. It is a must for all Bowie´s fan and also if you are a Barbie fan, as I am, this is a MUST HAVE.

Mattel has also taken to honoring other visitors to outer space as they recently made a Barbie doll of astronaut Sally Ride. "Sally Ride was the first American woman, and the youngest American, to fly in space. Her adventurous nature, quest for discovery and pioneering accomplishments inspire girls everywhere to boldly reach for the stars," a Mattel spokesperson told collectSPACE.
