D.C. Mayor Has A Huge 'Black Lives Matter' Name Painted On Street Near White House

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser also officially deemed the section of 16th Street bearing the mural "Black Lives Matter Plaza," complete with a new street sign.

The country has witnessed protests all over the country in the wake of last week's killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Now, its citizens are calling for racial justice, with Washington D.C.'s Mayor Muriel Bowser also joining in.

The African American politician sent a loud and clear message to the White House. Mayor Muriel Bowser contracted painters who created a massive Black Lives Matter sign on a street that leads to the White House. The sign spans two blocks of 16th Street. Bowser has officially deemed the section of 16th Street bearing the mural "Black Lives Matter Plaza," complete with a new street sign. NBC reports that John Falcicchio, chief of staff for Bowser, explained in a tweet: There was a dispute this week about whose street this is. Mayor Bowser wanted to make it abundantly clear that this is DC's street and to honor demonstrators who (were) peacefully protesting on Monday evening.

According to CNN, Bowser told reporters outside of St John's Church next to Lafayette Park that she and D.C. Council members were there "as Washingtonians we simply all want to be here together in peace to demonstrate that in America you can peacefully assemble, you can bring grievances to your government, and you can demand change.

We're here peacefully as Americans, on American streets, on DC streets," Bowser said. This seems to reference the recent clash that she has had with the federal government trying to police D.C. streets.

Many praised the Mayor's gesture. PamRotella tweeted: Suddenly I'm a huge fan of the mayor of Washington, DC. Lexi6toes added: Ok seriously this is GREAT!! Love it! You are a BOSS Mayor Bowser! Others had their doubts. myownbo50 wrote: Great, but when will our government/the powers stop spending zillions of dollars to oppress people of color and spend it on programs that uplift and build and unify all people. "UNITED WE STAND...DIVIDED WE FALL". Unfortunately we keep falling. Equality is the remedy! To which gaudess91 replied: Agreed...but this gesture can be an important first step. Albeit a baby step it is still in the right direction. This is going to be an uphill battle, please stay strong and positive.

However, the D.C. chapter of the Black Lives Matter Global Network criticized the gesture. The group tweeted: This is a performative distraction from real policy changes. Bowser has consistently been on the wrong side of BLMDC history. This is to appease white liberals while ignoring our demands. Black Lives Matter means defund the police.

Meanwhile, Trump took to Twitter to complain about the sign. He said: The incompetent Mayor of Washington, D.C., @MayorBowser, who’s budget is totally out of control and is constantly coming back to us for “handouts”, is now fighting with the National Guard, who saved her from great embarrassment......over the last number of nights. If she doesn’t treat these men and women well, then we’ll bring in a different group of men and women! The White House told The New York Post that Bowser’s lack of leadership forced Trump to restore law and order in Washington.
