Sony Pictures and Netflix are rumored to be partnering to create a complete theatrical and home video run, exclusively for the U.K. first and then it would be made available on Netflix worldwide.
Matilda the Musical is one of the most popular and much-loved stories based on the children's novel written by Roald Dahl. Its adaptation by Tim Minchin has found success in multiple forums including the massive success it registered at Broadway. The adaptation has found fans from the U.S, England, Australia and pretty much across the world.
The movie version of the novel was produced and released in 1996 and the role of Matilda was played by Mara Wilson. The movie was a great success among the fans but did not do that well at the box office. With time, however, the movie did become a classic. Matilda, in the story, is a genius in her own right but faces problems with a horrible school principal and even her parents who fail to understand her. But she was able to change the situation using her magical powers and successfully outwitted the principal to win the day.
Exclusive: 'Matilda the Musical,' based on Roald Dahl's children's novel, is coming to the big screen — and the small. Details: https://t.co/fO56SWqzma— The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) January 29, 2020
As reported by Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures and Netflix may partner up to create a complete theatrical and home video run, exclusively for the U.K. first and then it would be made available on Netflix worldwide.
In recent times, Netflix has been collaborating and co-financing multiple films with different production houses and this may be yet another example of such an association. It had partnered with New Line to finance the movie 'Shaft' and also with A24 for Adam Sandler's 'Uncut Gems' that is poised to hit the streaming service soon.
According to the reports by the Hollywood Reporter, Netflix had proposed to adapt Matilda in a new series of animated movies that may also include other fan favorites like BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. While the Matilda adaption has not been confirmed by either Sony or Netflix, it is rumored that Matthew Warchus may be roped in to direct the movie. The winner of Laurence Olivier Awards for the stage musical, Warchus is the artistic director of London's Old Vic Theatre. It is also being reported that Dennis Kelly, the Tony Award winner for best book adaptation may write the screenplay for the proposed movie.
Matilda the Musical has played in the theatres of London since 2011 and has won 4 Tony Awards. With the movie adaptation, Netflix is hoping to bring the magic on the screen while leveraging the fact that Matilda is already a well-known brand, in and of itself, which may help Netflix break new grounds.
