RIP: Ravi Zacharias, Renowned Christian Evangelist, Dies Of Cancer At 74

The world-renowned Christian evangelist and apologist passed away on Tuesday morning at the age of 74 after his battle with cancer.

World-renowned Christian Evangelist and apologist Ravi Zacharias passed away at the age of 74 on Tuesday, reported CBN News. He passed away just after a few months of being diagnosed with cancer. Zacharias rose to prominence in 1983 when Billy Graham invited him to speak at the inaugural International Conference for Itinerant Evangelists in Amsterdam, as reported in the obituary published by the ministry Zacharias founded.

Earlier this year, Zacharias announced that he was suffering from a malignant tumor of the sacrum called sarcoma and that he would undergo a surgery because of his severe back pain. He fought against cancer with the help of top medical experts but it was announced by her daughter two weeks ago that no treatment was available for the ailment. RZIM President Michael Ramsden said Zacharias always welcomed any person who questioned Christianity.

In a report published by NBC News, Ramsden said, "Ravi saw the objections and questions of others not as something to be rebuffed, but as a cry of the heart that had to be answered. People weren’t logical problems waiting to be solved; they were people who needed the person of Christ. Those who knew him well will remember him first for his kindness, gentleness, and generosity of spirit. The love and kindness he had come to know in and through Jesus Christ was the same love he wanted to share with all he met.”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp also issued a statement, saying, "He was a faithful servant who made an incredible impact on our world. Praying for peace and comfort for his loved ones during this difficult time." Zacharias is survived by his wife, three children, and five grandchildren. His daughter Sarah Zacharias Davis said, "It was his Savior, Jesus Christ, that my dad always wanted most to talk about. Even in his final days, until he lacked the energy and breath to speak, he turned every conversation to Jesus and what the Lord had done. "

Zacharias was born Frederick Antony Ravi Kumar Zacharias at Chennai, India in 1946. At the age of 17, he became a Christian while recovering in a Delhi hospital after he attempted suicide. In a previous interview with CBN News, Zacharias said, "I was on a bed of suicide in Delhi, searching for meaning, searching for the answers to life's basic questions. They boil down to this – origin, meaning, morality, and destiny. How did I come into being? What brings life meaning? How do I know right from wrong? Where am I headed after I die?"

He immigrated to Canada in 1966 and completed his graduation from Ontario Bible College in 1972. Thereafter, he got married to his wife Margie and the couple moved to Illinois where he completed his masters in Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He was the founder of a global apologetics ministry, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries in 1984 and is widely regarded as one of the respected figures in the Christian community because he answered the biggest questions in life with eloquence.

He was also a prolific author, and in 2004 he founded the Wellspring International. It is an outreach program developed by RZIM where they help people with poverty, injustice, and tragedy.
