Candy Corn and Halloween have always been synonymous, but it looks like those days are gone. Even though it may come as a huge shock to fans of the candy, it has been voted as the worst Halloween candy for 2019. The iconic tri-colored treat has always been associated with Halloween but a poll by CandyStore.com suggests otherwise. The website surveyed 40,000 of its customers. They also took lists put together by other websites like HuffPost, Business Insider, Buzzfeed, etc, into consideration. The best and worst candies were separated into two lists and the outcome was calculated in such a way that a candy that got listed as the worst gets 10 points, while one that ranks 10th worst gets one point.
The winner of the worst Halloween candy turned out to be Candy Corn, followed by Circus Peanuts which came in a close second. Circus peanuts were last year's winners of the worst candy but this year they went down a position, to number 2, giving the spot to Candy Corn. See, the thing is, this is just the opinion of around 40,000 people and a bunch of others, so fans of the candy have nothing to be dejected about. In fact, there's happy news for you.
According to People, CandyStore.com’s 2017 report, which utilized 10 years of Halloween sales data, stated that Candy Corn was the favorite Halloween Candy in six states in the US. Alabama, Idaho, Michigan, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and South Carolina. remain fans. However, Candy Corn is not the only thing that's on the list of the worst ones. Bit-O-Honey, Good & Plenty, licorice, Smarties, Tootsie Rolls, Necco Wafers, wax Coke bottles, Peanut Butter Kisses, and Circus Peanuts did not seem to win the taste buds of the poll takers.
Now, this leaves us wondering what actually is the best Halloween candy out there, doesn't it? The list of best Halloween candies included Hershey Bars, Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, Butterfingers, Nerds, M&Ms, Kit Kat, Twix, and Snickers. And the best of them all? Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and it actually bagged the top spot on seven of the online lists they included in their survey. Well, now that Halloween's just a few weeks away, you know what you need to pick.
However, you should be thankful that Candy Corns are the least favorite because they aren't really all that great for your health. According to Cosmopolitan, Charles Platkin, Ph.D., executive director of the New York City Food Policy Center at Hunter College and editor of DietDetective.com, assessed candy corn’s ingredients and the results weren't good. The ingredient coloring Yellow 5 can cause itching and hives. The study also claims that the candy’s hard outer coating comes from bugs! Yuck!
If that wasn't enough to put you off, then there's the fact that they also contain traces of animal hides and bone. It's not just made of sugar, there seems to be more its list of ingredients. The article goes on to say that the candy is actually made up of a dozen ingredients: 4 different kinds of sweeteners, including sugar, corn syrup, dextrose, and honey, but also includes the food dyes Yellow 6, Yellow 5, and Red 3, lab-made ingredients that are often vilified for questionable side effects. Fans of the candy probably did not need to know about this, right?
