In an interview, Josh Lucas has teased a sequel to Sweet Home Alabama and the possible storyline of the movie.
Looks like one of the best romantic comedies of all time - Sweet Home Alabama might be getting a much-deserved sequel after SEVENTEEN years! Directed by Andy Tennant, starring Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, Patrick Dempsey, and Candice Bergen, the iconic movie released in 2002 was not only a MAJOR BoxOffice success but also received huge critical acclaim from around the world. Ever since the movie's release, it has become a perfect holiday movie and has earned its spot in everybody's must watch movie list. And, keeping in mind that the movie's popularity hasn't aged a day, the director is planning to make a sequel to the super hit film.
The cast of the movie has been teasing a sequel since quite a while and now Josh Lucas has revealed that a potential sequel of Sweet Home Alabama is in the talks and he is totally on board with the idea. The 47-year-old actor who played Jake Perry in the movie said in an interview with Good Morning America that film's director Andy is cooking up a sequel. “I’ve absolutely said yes,” Josh teased that the movie might be getting a sequel with the original cast.
“He and I discussed it extensively so we’re lobbying the world to join us," he added revealing the possible storyline of the sequel which will pick up events from where the first movie left, somewhat. “The proposal … that the director had, which was quite interesting, is that my character [Jake] is back in Alabama and Reese’s character [Melanie] is back in New York with our kids and we’re divorced, so their whole life is super complicated."
He also revealed that Patrick Dempsey’s Andrew Hennings will also be in the movie, so we're guessing the good old love triangle will be back. In the first movie, Melanie is a successful fashion designer who gets engaged to Andrew and goes back to her home in Alabama to divorce her estranged husband Jake but then fate and destiny come to play and viewers get a 'what's meant to be, will be' sort of ending.
This isn't the first time Jake teased a sequel and played with our hearts. Last year too, the actor spilled some beans about a possible sequel, “I’ve even reached out to Reese, and I know Reese has said as well — it’s an iconic film,” he told Access Live in July. “I would love it because I would love to see where these characters ended up or where they are at this point in their lives.” So will we, Jake. So will we!
“I kind of love the idea that they have actually divorced and been divorced for a while and he wants her back. Kind of to realize what he’s lost again and that the kids even, that their lives have separated in some ways, and I think that’s sort of the magic of that story is that there’s an eternal love there. That bond that they have. Even when they’re apart, there’s something connected about the two of them. And that they’ve had it since they were little kids," he added.
Reese Witherspoon, too, said she'd be interested in a sequel before. In 2016, in a Facebook live video, the Cruel Intentions actress opened up saying that if a sequel does ever happen, she'll be back in a blink, "We are not making a sequel that I know of, but if Disney wants to make a sequel, they can just call me. I would happily make 'Sweet Home Alabama 2.'” Is the sequel really happening? Well, the director is ready with a plot and the original cast is ready to go ahead with it as well, so why not?
