'The Little Mermaid' Is Getting A Live TV Musical And The First Teaser Is Here

The star-studded cast includes Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula, Shaggy as Sebastian, John Stamos as Chef Louis, and Graham Phillips as Prince Eric.

It has been almost 30 years since we saw the classic animated The Little Mermaid in theaters. And now, we have multiple adaptions of the iconic Disney movie lined up and this includes the much-anticipated live-action remake that had made headlines over the past few months for its casting and of course, for remaking a classic.

But now, we could soon witness a visual spectacle thanks to ABC who are bringing us a live TV musical of The Little Mermaid with an "under-the-sea" hybrid version.

Considered more like a cross between the original animated film and the Tony award-winning Broadway stage version, we finally have the first look of The Little Mermaid Live! and it looks brilliant.

Do not get confused with the live-action film that stars Halle Bailey as Ariel. The feature film received a lot of backlash with a hashtag trending called #notmyariel. Fans were upset that the otherwise fair-skinned, red-haired mermaid was being played by an African- American.

We also finally got to see the star-studded cast including Auli’i Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula, Shaggy as Sebastian, John Stamos as Chef Louis, and Graham Phillips as Prince Eric.

If you think Auli’i Cravalho sounds like a name you have heard before, well, the talented actor was known for playing Moana! There is no doubt over her singing abilities, we will now finally get to see her acting chops as well.

The project comes from The Wonderful World of Disney and ABC which will not only have live musical performances, but it will also be interwoven into a broadcast of the original feature film. As reported by EW.

You can check out The Little Mermaid Live! that airs on Tuesday, November 5 at 8 p.m.

Meanwhile, while speaking to Deadline, director Hamish Hamilton called The Little Mermaid Live! an "interesting hybrid."

"The Little Mermaid Live! is a celebration. We’re celebrating this incredible animated feature, and we’re gonna do it on the Disney lot. We’re going to do it live-to-air in front of a live audience in a room that we’ve created. So we’re going to invite anybody to come, both televisionally and real people, real fans, come to our Little Mermaid theater," Hamish said.

"In the middle of the room, we will have a giant projection surface, and on that projection surface we will play the feature. When we get to one of Alan [Merken] and Howard [Ashman’s wonderful songs, essentially we will transition beautifully and smoothly into a world of live performance," he added.
