Artist Creates 18 Horror Comics With Dark And Unexpected Endings

According to the artist Edd Lai, these comics are designed in such a way that the readers themselves get to take part in the story

Edd Lai is an artist who has a flair for telling wonderful stories. His true passion lies in graphic arts, and he managed to combine two interests in one and create an incredible comic strip that has blown our minds. "I have always enjoyed reading. And I like all kinds of books, including graphic novels. But it wasn’t until I was 19 that I started writing creepy stories," the 29-year-old artist from Taiwan told Bored Panda. "I was lucky to have my novels published by several publishers that we're searching for young writers. Since then, I’ve made writing my living, constantly pursuing this profession. I was also commissioned to write several screenplays for movies."

"My greatest passion lies in graphic arts — I enjoy telling scary stories not only through words but through pictures as well," Lai explained, adding that bringing in visuals allows him to portray his feelings and plot twists way better. "[Currently], I'm working on my new experimental series, titled Edd Lai's Stories. [Through my comics], I try to explore the different facades of humanity, highlighting our perception of the world," he said. The series which Lai describes as "horrifying" but in a "bright and delightful" way, explores the good and evil of humanity. "We tend to label everything we know, but there's often a difference between the way a thing looks and the way it is underneath its appearance," he said.

"My stories might appear to be dark, but they can be delightful or even cute. The pieces I've written for 'Edd Lai's Stories' are short, [but they have] a sudden twist at the end, which makes them super dramatic," Lai added. He explained that his comics are designed in such a way that the readers themselves participate in the storyline, filling in the gaps as they read. "I love it when my readers ask me a lot of questions about my stories. Also, since the stories are so sharp, they're good candidates for movies and other kinds of adaptations," he said. And while Lai admits that he has a dark place in his heart, he clarified that he doesn't let it control his personal life. "The most important thing is that we can always choose to light up the night," he said.

So without further adieu, go ahead and enjoy his 18-panel  "horrifying" but "bright and delightful" masterpiece.
