This Shelter Lets Their Animals Pick Out Gifts From Under Christmas Tree In Heartfelt Gesture

These animals at this shelter got to choose Christmas presents from a pile, but ultimately got the best gift of all —loving homes!

Undoubtedly, opening presents on Christmas morning is one of the greatest feelings in the world. If you have a pet, chances are that they get a Christmas stocking up on the mantel or fireplace just like all the children in your family do. While we animal lovers adore spoiling our furry friends, sometimes I can't help but wonder about the poor pets at animal shelters who are still waiting to find their forever families. Well,  this animal shelter decided to treat its animal residents to a special holiday surprise.  They let each and every pooch head to their Christmas tree and pick a gift for themselves from underneath it. The now-viral video will instantly fill you with absolute, unbridled joy.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa decided to make the animals' days when they let them jump onto a mountain of toys and choose one as a gift for themselves. All the toys were donated by the community for ARL-Iowa’s annual “Tree of Life” program, an event that the shelter holds every year wherein people can bring in pet food, supplies, and toys to last the shelter numerous months into the new year. This year, they decided to let the animal residents have a field day with some of the donations. According to Stephanie Filer, manager of special gifts and partnerships for the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, the pets acted just like children would when unwrapping gifts on Christmas morning. She said, "[It was like] seeing kids on Christmas morning after Santa has made his deliveries." Talk about cute!

An adorable total of five dogs and four cats got to pick presents from the massive pile of goodies underneath the Christmas tree. Needless to say, the reactions from all the pets were too precious to handle. Filer stated that watching the animals choose their gifts was just as fun as watching them actually play with the toys once they had made a choice. Apparently, each animal had a different strategy when it came to picking out the perfect gift. Some animals immediately grabbed one and began playing with it, while others took their time, checking out their options before making a final decision. One dog, in particular, named Boss, was just so excited about all the attention that he was getting that he didn't even have the time — or interest, perhaps — to choose a toy. He just wanted to hang out with his loving caretakers and didn't play with his toy until he finally got back to his kennel.

As for the cats, they mostly "enjoyed playing ON the donated items" rather than choosing a toy for themselves, Filer revealed. But the best part of all? All but one of the pets got adopted that day. The only furry friend who didn't find a forever home was a cutie called Frank. A sweet young kitten, he's still waiting on his Christmas miracle. If you want to give him the best present of all, a loving home, you can take a look at the ARL-Iowa website to do so. If you can't adopt, you can make a donation, as it's the season of giving after all.
