All The Hidden Ghosts You Probably Missed In 'The Haunting Of Hill House'

How many of these ghosts have you noticed?

When Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House debuted, it became an instant hit within a few weeks. Not only does the story offer countless obvious scares, director Mike Flanagan asked the viewers to watch the show for a second time since there are a lot of hidden ghosts in the background that we may have missed. While the bent-neck lady was undoubtedly the scariest ghost, there is a lot of subtle presence of ghosts throughout the series that makes it even more terrifying.

The story is based on the 1959 Shirley Jackson novel of the same name and uses flashbacks to tell the story of the Crain family where all the five siblings are dealing with repressed trauma and PTSD after living in the Hill house. In an interview with Vulture, Flanagan said, "We actually hid dozens of ghosts throughout the series, in plain sight, in the deep background of shots. We don't call any attention to them, but they're there."

He continued, "If you look in a door frame, or under the piano, or behind a curtain in a lot of otherwise ordinary scenes, you'll see someone there." Scroll down to see some of our favorite scenes of hidden ghosts that you might have missed.

1. Episode One - "Steven Sees A Ghost"

In the first episode, Steve claims he has never seen a ghost in his house, but in the above picture, we can clearly see someone looming in the corner, right behind him.

2. Episode One - "Steven Sees A Ghost" Part 2

Netflix

In this episode, as Hugh and Steven manage to escape the top floor of the haunted building, they are in such a rush to leave the house that they completely failed to take notice of the spirits of young people that appear next to the staircase.

3. Episode Two - "Open Casket"

Netflix

In this episode, when young Shirley catches her mom drawing blueprints, Olivia admits that she is drawing her dream home. If you look closely, in the garden behind Shirley, you can see a disembodied face.

4. Episode Three - "Touch"

Netflix

As Theo joins Luke and Nell after they discover the in-house communication system, a tall ghostly figure can be seen peering in through the glass of the door.

5. Episode Three - "Touch" part 2

Netflix

In this episode, a young Theo discovers the hatch that takes her down to the basement, and the viewers are greeted by a ghoulish face that was most likely responsible for Luke's attack.

6. Episode Three - "Touch" part 3

Netflix

It looks like this episode had the most number of undocumented ghosts and the narrative primarily focused on Theo. Later on in the episode, another ghost can be seen attached to her mother Olivia in the hall while Theo chats with her.

7. Episode Four - "The Twin Thing"

Netflix

This episode primarily focuses on Luke as both he and Nell attempted to tell their parents that something weird was happening in their home. While running and playing, both the children didn't see the ghoul behind a chair in the hallway.

8. Episode Five - "The Bent-Neck Lady"

Netflix

In this episode, while Luke is descending from the stairs, we can see two figures beside the stairs in the same place we saw them in the first episode.

9. Episode Five - "The Bent-Neck Lady" part 2

Netflix

As Flanagan rightly pointed out you can see the ghosts under the staircase or under the piano. Most of the apparitions in the series looked human and were harmless, however, the figure under the piano appeared very sinister.

10. Episode Seven - "Eulogy"

Netflix

The seventh episode sheds some light on Hugh and even he is being stalked and followed by the ghosts. In a scene where Hugh tried to uncover the truth about what was hiding in the Red Room, a ghost keeps a watchful eye from behind a door.
